33% of corporations are modernizing infrastructure and applications
A study conducted by The Economist magazine, sponsored by HP and Oracle, also shows that 28% of companies are choosing what they modernize.
A survey conducted by The Economist, with the sponsorship of HP and Oracle, indicates that 33% of firms interviewed are planning or running processes complete modernization, while 28% of companies are in the process of selective modernization of applications and IT infrastructure . Among the study participants, 17% believe that the constant renewal of the infrastructure of information technology makes it unnecessary to modernize it, while 5% have no plan of doing it.
According to consultant Carol Rizzo, who has been Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Citibank, corporations that seek to modernize its infrastructure are subject to a family living in the last century. "The next equipment plugged likely to cause a short circuit in the whole house, which means that the company will not be ready for what's to come," he explains.
Of all the projects that have implemented the modernization, improvement of quality of service was most noted by the companies (67%). Second is better able to generate revenue (50%), and third, tied at 22%, are simplifying the environment and infrastructure and reduce disruption to business processes.
Despite the benefits found in the survey and interviewed, the idea of creating a project to modernize still frightens some executives. The biggest concern is about cost, mentioned by 53% of companies. Then, the interruption of productivity for implementation (35%) and preservation of the functionality of applications (32%).
The study can be complicated to talk about grandiose projects at a time of post-crisis. Yet who chooses to carry out the project believes that the crisis is a chance to rethink the business, which is the technology infrastructure. For the vice president of software and solutions from HP, Paul Muller, it is possible emplacar a project in the company to sell the idea of transparency in IT infrastructure. "The modernization of the infrastructure allows the CIO to map the environment and show much more clearly the return of every dollar invested and the value that technology brings."
The survey was conducted in two stages: 170 companies from around the world were heard in July 2009 and then, executives from various industries were interviewed personally to complement the study.
